How can Parents Support Swimmers?

  • 1.Encourage your swimmer to swim their personal best race. A swimmer’s success should be measured on how they personally swim compared to solely relying on their place at the conclusion of the race.
  • 2.Encourage your swimmers to strive to reach our two team and individual goals:
    • a.Sportsmanship- Encourage your swimmers to display positive sportsmanship to their teammates and the opponents. Swimmers are asked to stay in the water until the conclusion of their race until all the swimmers have touched the wall. Swimmers are then asked to acknowledge their opponent through a handshake or verbal positive expression. Parents can support the swimmers and the team through this goal by asking the swimmers to stay in the water and shaking their opponent’s hand at the conclusion of their race prior to pushing out of the pool.
    • b.Cheering- Encourage your swimmers to cheer for the Seahorses throughout the meet. At the conclusion of the butterfly races, swimmers will be asked to stand next to the coach for the “ahh-osh” cheering during the relays. Encourage your swimmers to support all the races and come together to cheer during the freestyle relays.
  • 3.Encourage your swimmer to talk to a coach before and after their race. A coach can provide feedback on a swimmer’s performance after each race. The swimmer must take the responsibility to talk to the coaches when they finish a race.
